Step‑by‑Step Instructions for Char Siu Chicken
  1. In a medium bowl, combine hoisin sauce, honey, soy sauce, five-spice powder, minced garlic, rice vinegar, and optional red food coloring. Whisk until smooth.
  2. Place chicken in a resealable bag or shallow dish and pour marinade over it. Seal and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight.
  3. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) or grill for medium-high heat about 15 minutes before cooking.
  4. Remove chicken from marinade and place on greased baking sheet or grill. Reserve some marinade for basting. Cook for 25-30 minutes until internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  5. Baste chicken with reserved marinade halfway through cooking for enhanced flavor.
  6. Once cooked, let the chicken rest for about 5 minutes. Slice and serve warm with jasmine rice or sautéed vegetables.
