Ingredients
  

For the Meat Sauce
  • 1 pound Ground Beef can substitute with ground turkey
  • 1 pound Italian Sausage use meatless version for vegetarian
  • 1 Onion chopped
  • 3 cloves Garlic minced
  • 28 ounces Crushed Tomatoes fresh tomatoes can be used
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato Paste
  • 15 ounces Tomato Sauce can replace with additional crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar optional
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Basil
  • 1 teaspoon Fennel Seeds
  • Italian Seasoning
  • Salt to taste
  • Black Pepper to taste
For the Cheese Filling
  • 15 ounces Ricotta Cheese can substitute with cottage cheese
  • 1 large Egg binds the mixture
  • 1/4 cup Fresh Parsley chopped
For the Lasagna Assembly
  • 9 sheets Lasagna Noodles use no-boil noodles for easier prep
  • 16 ounces Mozzarella Cheese shredded
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese grated

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large pot over medium heat, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage with chopped onion and minced garlic for about 8-10 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  2. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Season with sugar, dried basil, fennel seeds, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 30 minutes.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, salt, pepper, and parsley until smooth.
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread a layer of meat sauce in a baking dish. Layer with noodles, ricotta filling, and mozzarella. Repeat until ingredients are used, ending with mozzarella on top.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.
  6. Let the lasagna cool for 15 minutes before slicing and serving.
