  • 1 tsp Dried Oregano fresh oregano can be substituted if available
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder fresh minced garlic can be used instead
  • 1 tsp Dried Basil using fresh basil adds a stronger flavor
  • 3 cups All-Purpose Flour opt for gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option
  • 1 tsp Salt essential for taste balance
Filling Ingredients
  • 1 large Onion yellow or white onions work well
  • 2 cups Spinach fresh or frozen (thawed) spinach can be used
  • 2 tbsp Vegan Butter any plant-based butter is suitable
  • 1 cup Tomato Sauce jarred marinara can be used for a quick substitute
  • 1 tbsp Fresh Basil can use dried basil but will alter freshness
  • 1/4 cup Nutritional Yeast optional for a cheesy flavor

Method
 

Dough Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warmed almond milk, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add olive oil, dried oregano, garlic powder, dried basil, and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually incorporate all-purpose flour until a smooth dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes on a floured surface until silky. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 1-2 hours.
Filling Preparation
  1. Heat vegan butter in a skillet over medium-low heat and add sliced onions. Cook for 20-30 minutes until caramelized, then stir in spinach for 2 minutes.
Rolling and Baking
  1. Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a rectangle. Spread tomato sauce, add caramelized onions, spinach, and fresh basil.
  2. Roll the dough tightly into a log, slice into 12 pieces, and place in a greased baking dish. Let rise for another 30-60 minutes.
  3. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 34-38 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
